Age Group Selection Process

Are you looking to pick up one of the coveted spots on the Triathlon Canada National Age Group team for the 2018 ITU World Championships in Gold Coast,  Australia or the 2018 ITU Fyn MultiSport World Championships in Fyn, Denmark?  This page contains answers to some of the questions you may have about the selection process. Please note: Triathlon Canada has the final say on all team selections. For the most up to date information, please refer to the Triathlon Canada Website:

How to represent Canada at the ITU World Championships (Age-Group)

This year the Ottawa International Triathlon has been allocated 10 spots per age group in both the Standard Distance Championships and Sprint Distance Championships (Draft Legal) as well as 5 spots per age group in the Aquathlon Championships. So how does that work?

1. Age-Adjusted results

Suppose you have run your race and have come top 10 (or 5 in the case of the Aquathlon) in your age group – does that guarantee you are on the team? Not necessarily. The qualifying spots are based on age-adjusted results. Triathlon Canada will be adjusting results to reflect age groups based on athlete ages as of December 31st 2017. This means that the athlete who comes 10th in the F40-45 category may in fact end up 12th after the adjustment if 2 athletes in the F35-39 category place higher on race day but “age up” as a result of the adjustments (as an example) for the year 2018.

2. How will I know if I have qualified and when can I sign up?

After the race has concluded, results will be made official and age-adjusted results will be posted.  By early July, athletes that qualify will be sent an invitation from Triathlon Canada congratulating them on receiving a position on Team Canada. That letter will contain the link to register. Athletes who qualify are urged to sign up as soon as possible to confirm their spot on the team.

3. How much will it cost to register for Team Canada?

In order to complete the registration process, athletes will need to pay a non-refundable Team Fee to hold their spot (this will be posted to the site above in addition being included in your letter of invitation). The remaining cost of entry fees and uniform Fees will be payable at a later date and exact amounts will be announced once they are determined.
